Our approach is a bit different from other consulting firms. We do not believe in a standard questionnaire with 100+ questions. We will of course have questions for the software vendors but we start with interviewing your key stakeholders. Based on our own experience with software selections, both as a) buyer, b) facilitator and c) software vendor, we know that it is not just about software features, vendor, technical platform etc. The correct software choice is ultimately decided by the users of the system. What is important to them? What are their skills and experience? In what IT/data environment do they operate? How often will it be used? Etc.

We do not believe in a time horizon of much longer than 5-7 years. In those years many things can happen and software will change. Therefore we help our clients with looking at the best ROI taking into account this time horizon. Our philosophy therefore is to focus on:

  • Strategic/tactical direction of the organization for the next 5 to 7 years and the type of information required;
  • The critical source systems;
  • The actual users of the software;
  • The software features that are critical for the above

For us software selection is like buying a car. In the end it is about which car works best for the buyer’s situation given his/her budget. You have to deal with the more rational questions like do you want a new model? Do you want a new or used car? What type of fuel is important? What type of model? etc. And also address the more emotional and implicit questions. Do i like the car? What brand do i like to be associated with? How does it drive? etc. But in the end it is mostly about the buyer’s situation. Is the buyer single or does he/she have a partner and/or kids? Where do you live? What do you want to do with the car? Do you want to lease of buy the car? etc.
